Character name: Lucia fon Fabre (Asch)
Character age: 17

AU? Luke fon Fabre was born Lucia fon Fabre. At the age of 10, she was kidnapped and a replica Lucia was created to fool everyone into thinking she was still on a foreordained course to destruction. But her beloved Master Van had saved her from that fate, and made her one of his own God-Generals -- Asch the Bloody. Bitter and lonely, Asch gave Van everything she had to give: including her utmost loyalty and devotion. Although she worries about her childhood friends... well. They're the ones who betrayed her first.

Personality: As a duchess-to-be, and cousin to the future queen (thus putting her only a tragic hop, skip, and a jump from being crowned queen herself) Lucia was raised to be serious, dedicated, and <s>a bitch</s> <s>arrogant</s> opinionated. She's proud, short-tempered, and extremely stubborn, but she's also very very secretly compassionate -- sympathetic to the people, genuinely wanting to save those less fortunate. And she's more than willing to teach other people the values and behaviors she thinks would meld the best leaders and do the most good.

But the events of her childhood taught her a rigid independence, almost pathological. Asch will always, if possible, give you the impression that you are expendable, mean nothing to her, and are annoying to boot; she's less in denial about what she wants than her counterpart, but far more in denial about the lengths she'll go to in order to avoid giving up what few things she loves. Even years later, she still feels stung by the perceived betrayal of her loved ones, and so she'll insist that she's in control, she could leave any time! but the truth is that those are just words, and she's so desperate to be wanted that she will sacrifice a great deal to earn the praise of those people left to her.

A naturally suspicious person, Asch doesn't believe in promises or pretty words. It's actions and people who impress her, and even that grudging respect is very, very slowly won. She's quiet and reserved, but extremely quick to anger and she will hold anything you say against you -- oh yes, Virginia, forever.

Relationships:
Van. Oh, Van. The children of Duke Fabre just adore you, don't they? And this Asch is no different; when praise from her father was rare and often accompanied by further burdens ("Don't disappoint me, Lucia") it was always Van who gave her the unconditional support that she ached for. She formed quite a shameless little-girl crush on him as a child, and Van encouraged that -- playing the role of admirer almost as often as the role of kind mentor, and moreso as she grew older. And, well, it didn't stay a little-girl crush...

Legretta. Van believed very firmly that the young Asch needed a strong, competent female to look up to; fortunately, he had one handy. Legretta wound up working very closely with Asch as well as Tear, and although initially Asch admired Legretta and was often cross when the older woman had to vanish to tutor Van's sister in the Qliphoth, things became strained in a few years. They are to this day still close, like sisters, but -- even the closest of sisters can fall out if both of them like the same man.

Natalia. Lucia's best friend and her hope for the future of Kimlasca. When they were young, Lucia would attempt to coach the older girl to have a world view more conducive to ruling; she was, in a way, Natalia's champion, trying to give her wisdom and happiness and willing to stand between Natalia and anyone who wanted to interfere in her life. It's been years since Asch and Natalia crossed paths -- and Asch feels like Natalia's friendship with the replica is some sort of personal betrayal -- but she still genuinely hopes that Natalia will live, and be happy, and be a wonderful ruler... even if they never seen each other again.

Writing Sample:

Asch watched the ceremony with her jaw set, nothing in her features betraying what she really felt about the whole arrangement. All around her was a long line of priests with their faces shining their earnest excitement, going up one by one to be sworn in as a Maestro of the Order of Lorelei. Asch felt like she was the only one who cared nothing for the title, although every now and again when she looked up, it seemed to her that Fon Master Ion's beatific smile was something of a mask itself, held in place by Van's presence at the young girl's elbow.

The whole room was crowded with bodies, and the Fon Master repeated the same words for each and touched the forehead of each and waved them on like a production line -- rote, meaningless gestures.

Why did I ever even consider becoming a Maestro? Asch wondered. It wasn't necessary to serve as a God-General -- Legretta and Dist had never been ordained by the Order of Lorelei -- and it was scarcely relevant, knowing the way Asch did that there were forces already in motion to overturn the iron word of the Score.

The only person Asch actually knew with any status in the Order of Lorelei (the Fon Master aside) was Van, and the only thing she'd ever thought about his duties in that sense was, He makes those silly Maestro robes look so dignified...

Asch flushed and glanced away from the proceedings for a moment to recover her composure -- the color in her face could be explained by the stuffiness of the room. When Van glanced at her, she shook her head brusquely and waved him back to the meaningless proceedings.

All the same -- she was glad she'd decided against becoming a Maestro. Enough to be in command of the Secret Ops, to be the infamous God-General Asch the Bloody, to be Van's right hand... she didn't need to cling to a religion about to breathe its last.

And Van had looked so disapproving when she'd wondered aloud about taking the examinations, to better understand the enemy. If she had been more rebellious, perhaps she would've done it to spite him, but not her -- and not to Van. Instead, she had dismissed the idea, and he had invited her here to see this...

...Charade.

She was very glad not to be a part of it, really. And those ridiculous robes, hanging over her like a tabard or a shroud -- well, she definitely wasn't sorry to pass those up.
